- Is JAWS the highest-grossing movie of all time?
No, but it was at one point! JAWS was released during the summer of 1975, and once it officially outgrossed The Godfather, it became the highest-grossing film of all time—until Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope came out two years later. Still, JAWS defined what we now know as the modern blockbuster.
- What inspired Steven Spielberg’s JAWS?
Before the film, there was the book. Spielberg’s movie was based off of author Peter Benchley’s 1974 book of the same title. Benchley also got a cameo in the film as a TV reporter.
- How big was the shark?
The mechanically powered shark used to portray the film’s frighteningly massive great white measured in at 25 feet long. You might remember Hooper’s “that’s a twenty footer” line, before Quint says, “Twenty-five. Three tons of him.”
- How far along into the film do viewers first see the shark?
The mechanical shark had repeated technical difficulties during filming, which unintentionally resulted in viewers not seeing it for much of the film. In fact, the first scene where you can see the full shark is over an hour in.
- What is the movie’s most famous line?
“You’re gonna need a bigger boat,” and it wasn’t scripted. The movie’s famous quote was improvised by actor Roy Scheider.
